Many new makes and models come with advanced driver assistant systems like lane departure, brake assist, blind spot detection, collision avoidance systems that can slow-down or completely stop your vehicle, and more – all known as ADAS. These increase driver safety and can help you avoid an accident. But, how do they work?

ADAS systems use sensors that are imbedded within the vehicle and many times, located with attachments to the windshield.

There are several functions of ADAS that use a variety of different sensors. More and more vehicles today come with these systems and include imbedded sensors attached to windshields, windows and side mirrors to provide the driver with vital information to avoid collision.

Does Insurance Cover This?

• If you file an insurance claim for your windshield replacement, we will bill the insurance company for the recalibration and arrange the appointment for you.
• If you choose to pay for your windshield replacement out of pocket, we will help you arrange the necessary recalibration and either include it in the price of the replacement, or leave that between you and the service facility (your choice).

Not everyone realizes it, but a windshield can save your life

The structural integrity of a vehicle relies on the windshield. It offers vital support for the cabin, making it a necessary safety component in the event of an accident.

For example, during a front-end collision a windshield offers as much as 45% of the vehicle’s structural integrity, while a rollover increases this to 60%. The difference a windshield makes in an accident is clear.

Moreover, the windshield can directly protect the driver and passenger of a vehicle during an accident. For instance, during a massive collision a windshield can prevent you from being thrown from the vehicle.

If the vehicle were to rollover during a crash, the windshield prevents the roof from collapsing in, protecting passengers from a potentially fatal accident. It’s also vital for the safe deployment of an airbag, so it is clear just how imperative a windshield is for automotive safety.

This is why a damaged windshield should never be neglected; do not hold off from getting the necessary repairs or replacement. If left unrepaired, even a small crack or rock chip can spread, leading to an eventual replacement. One of our many certified auto technicians, Benito Fernandez, completed a windshield replacement for a customer in March 2017. Benito did what he is trained to do and properly installed the windshield.

It’s fortunate that he did, as the customer’s wife was involved in a head-on collision shortly thereafter. The severity of the accident was terrifying, with another vehicle literally going through her windshield.

The windshield remained fully bonded and thanks to the quality workmanship completed by Benito, Mrs. Clayton was kept from major harm.

Needless to say, Benito did a world-class job, making the difference between life and death, and we could not be more proud of him.

The annual event brings together individuals from throughout the auto glass industry to learn about all of the latest technologies, best practices, innovations and participate in one of the more intense competitions, the Auto Glass Technician Olympics.

Collin represented Don's Mobile Glass at the AGTO in San Antonio and finished in the top 4 out of 24 contestants. That officially recognizes him as one of the top auto glass technicians, and we can tell you that he certainly earned the spot!

The competition aims to highlight the industry knowledge and expertise of technicians from across the country and beyond, with many of them traveling from outside of the United States to participate. Individuals must perform various auto glass repairs and replacements under timed conditions.

Additionally, contestants must showcase their in-depth knowledge of industry standards to ensure a safe and efficient installation. In this competition, judges expect precision. Contestants must also demonstrate their exceptional communication skills as they explain every step of their process as though speaking to a real customer.

As we said, this is pretty competitive, which is why Collin was closely monitored by a proctor judge throughout the two-day long competition! Not only that, but a rotating selection of industry specialists also judged and recorded each move he made throughout more than 30 checkpoints long-established by the AGTO.

If that doesn’t sound like a high-pressure scenario, the fact that there are over 100 spectators closely watching your every move might convince you otherwise!

Despite this, Collin showed an amazing level of determination, professionalism and skill leading him to an impressive finish in the top 4. We are immensely proud of Collin and honored to have him at our Merced Store.

Events such as the annual Auto Glass Week and AGTO competition offer the chance for us to better improve all aspects of our work. We can improve our knowledge, add new skills, and show our ability to take that extra step to ensure we continue to provide a world-class installation every time.
