Children should learn about Merced car care now before they learn to drive and buy a vehicle of their own.
You’ve decided to take the kids to the Castle Air Museum this morning. It’s just one of the Merced area activities that appeal to kids and parents. The non-profit Car Care Council has another suggestion for sharing quality time with your kids – teaching them now to take care of their car. That way, when they grow up and buy one, they already know how to keep it running for a long time.
“Many children love learning how cars operate, however, they don’t really understand the nuts and bolts of what it takes to properly maintain a car,” said Rich White, executive director, Car Care Council. “By taking the time to teach your children the basics of car care, they will not only learn to appreciate the value of taking care of a car, but they will be more informed and better prepared for the day they become a car owner.”
Among the pointers you should be teaching your kids – checking (or having someone else check) the oil, wipers and blades. While you’re doing that, the council says you can also explain “the importance of being able to see and be seen when driving” and “how periodic oil and filter changes help keep your car clean on the inside of the engine. Also explain that other vehicle fluids, such as windshield solvent, should be checked and refilled to keep the car running properly.”
And, of course, don’t forget that all important tip about washing and waxing the car to keep it gleaming and to help spot any dents, bumps, dings, scratches or broken glass. Finding those now can avoid bigger expenses down the road.
